Headphones in a Sauna: What Works and What Gets Destroyed
Updated January 2025 — Backyard Sauna Pro
Short version: do not bring AirPods into a sauna. Most headphones will not survive it. Here is why, and what your actual options are.
Why Sauna Heat Destroys Electronics
Lithium-ion batteries degrade rapidly above 140°F. At 160-185°F (standard sauna temperature), permanent capacity loss happens in a single exposure. The battery may swell, leak, or in extreme cases rupture. Beyond the battery, the adhesives sealing most earbuds dissolve at high heat, the driver membranes warp, and solder joints can fail.
IPX ratings (waterproofing) have nothing to do with heat resistance. AirPods Pro are IPX4 — meaning they handle sweat and light rain. That says nothing about 180°F dry heat or steam.
Options That Actually Work
Option 1: Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker Outside the Sauna
The most practical solution. Place a waterproof Bluetooth speaker just outside the sauna door (or in the changing room) with the door cracked slightly. Sound carries into a small sauna easily. The speaker stays at room temperature, lasts indefinitely, and sounds better than earbuds in an enclosed space.

Bone conduction headphones like the Shokz OpenSwim are built for swimming (IP68) and have no sealed ear drivers that trap heat. Some sauna users report using them on the lower bench where temperatures are 20-40°F cooler than the upper bench. Still not rated for sauna use and battery still degrades with heat — but lower risk than standard earbuds.

Purpose-built sauna speaker systems exist — passive speakers with a wired connection to an amplifier outside the sauna room. No electronics inside the heat zone. Harvia and a few other sauna brands make these. More installation work but a permanent, reliable solution.
Temperature by Bench Level
Temperature varies significantly by height in a sauna:
- Upper bench (near ceiling): 175-195°F — no electronics should go here
- Lower bench: 130-155°F — still above electronics ratings but lower risk
- Floor level: 100-120°F — coolest zone, closest to electronics tolerance
Even the floor of a traditional sauna exceeds the rated operating temperature of most electronics. The lower bench is not a safe zone for AirPods or modern earbuds.
FAQ
Can you use AirPods in a sauna?
No. AirPods are rated to 95°F maximum. Sauna temperatures run 160-185°F. One session can permanently damage the battery and electronics. Not covered by Apple warranty.
What headphones can you use in a sauna?
The safest approach is a waterproof Bluetooth speaker outside the sauna with the door slightly open. Bone conduction headphones on the lower bench are a lower-risk option but still not designed for sauna temperatures.
